Austria: The conversion conducted by mZERO, an engineering consultancy in Austria, has resulted in replacing the 122kW engine of the MAN X534 track machine with hydrogen fuel cells of the same power produced by Accelera (part of Cummins, USA).

Besides, the Austrian company has equipped the track machine, produced by the order of the Austrian Federal Railways (OBB) more than 40 years ago, with a battery package. The project was funded by FFG, an Austrian research promotion agency.

Accelera is the new name for Canadian Hydrogenics acquired by Cummins. The rebranded company is now implementing a contract for the supply of hydrogen fuel cells for Alstom Coradia iLint trains. Last year, Cummins and Leclanche, a leading provider of energy storage solutions from Switzerland, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on development and introduction of battery-only and hydrogen fuel cell solutions for railway and marine transport.
