Switzerland tests wheel-to-rail adhesion on slopes of up to 125‰

Switzerland: The narrow-gauge railway operator the Zentralbahn (ZB) and the Institute for Rail Vehicles and Transport Systems (IFS) are conducting the tests.

Modelling has shown that safe operation on such slopes is possible without a tooth rack, when combining pneumatic and magnetic track brakes.

Currently, a Be 4/4 railcar is undergoing trials on a slope of up to 105‰. The railcar was produced by the Swiss FFA in 1985 and is fitted with magnetic track brakes and measuring instruments. A shunting diesel locomotive is used to supply power and air to the brake system.

After processing and analysing the preliminary results, further tests are planned. If successful, ZB expects to eliminate the use of rack rails on many sections, reducing the cost of rolling stock purchase and track maintenance.
