Germany: The refurbishment has been carried out for a four-car 424 electric train produced by the ADtranz–Siemens consortium in 1999. The German passenger operator plans to put the EMU into service by the end of April.
The upgraded train now has a renewed livery and a contemporary interior with passenger information systems, electrical sockets, and LED lighting. The number of seats has increased from 188 to 197, and the overall capacity from 434 to 508 passengers. The new interior design features multifunctional areas for bicycles and strollers, as well as two seating arrangements for wheelchair users.
By 2025, DB Regio is going to refurbish its entire fleet of 424 EMUs comprising 24 trainsets. They will replace the outdated 420 EMUs produced between 1969 and 1997. By 2026, another 99 trainsets (series 422 and 423) are to be overhauled. A total of €350 mln will be allocated for these activities by the Rhineland and Rhine-Ruhr transport associations.
