Georgia: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has named Metrowagonmash (part of TMH) the winner of the tender for the supply of 11 four-car metro trains, TASS reports. The contract value should be €49.2 mln.

The Transmashholding’s (TMH) plant bypassed the other competitors, but they are not disclosed. The trains are to be delivered within the next three years. In particular, in 2022, the Administration of Tbilisi expects to receive 2 trains.

The tender was announced by the capital of Georgia in 2020 under a €65 mln loan from the EBRD and a €10 mln grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). In addition to the rolling stock purchase, funds must be used for the depot and tunnel modernization.

Today, the Tbilisi metro fleet consists of trains produced by Metrowagonmash and the Leningrad Carriage Works (now Vagonmash) from 1974 to 1992. The average age of more than 65% of trains is 27 years, about 35% – 41 years. In 2005-2017, the Tbilisi metro operator modernized most of the cars, including the replacement of electrical equipment, interior and exterior changes.

The launch of a new generation of 81-765/766/767 metro trains on the market has allowed TMH in recent years to significantly increase its revenue in this segment, to more than 45 bln RUR (approx. $700 mln USD), and to develop the export of this type of rolling stock. So, last October, the Russian manufacturer completed the contract for the supply of 40 81-765.5/766.5/767.5 metro cars for the Tashkent metro. Also, a contract for the supply of 60 81-765.B/766.B cars (12 five-car trains) for the Azerbaijan capital underground is currently under implementation. At the moment, 8 trains (40 cars) have been delivered to the country, the rest is planned to be sent until 2023. In addition, the manufacturer fulfills its obligations under the contract option for the modernization of 40 81-717.4/714.4 cars for the Sofia Metro in Bulgaria.
