USA: The BART metro administration forecasts such a cost reduction to be achieved through a higher pace of supplying the cars and a greater involvement of its experienced staff in the engineering works.
Two contracts on 775 Movia metro cars, concluded in 2012–2013 with Bombardier Transportation (acquired by Alstom in 2021), were estimated at $2.6 bln. However, last year’s financial report lowered the forecast by 15% to $2.2 bln.
The original supply schedule saw the delivery of ten cars monthly but when the second contract was signed in 2013, the number was increased to 16 units. This led to saving more than $100 mln. Currently, BART receives 20 cars in a month, so the whole rolling stock is to be supplied this year. The production is localised in the USA at the plants in Pittsburgh and Plattsburgh.
