USA: Lori Kahikina, executive director and CEO of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART), said this as she reviewed the first six months of operation of the Skyline light rail system. She described the figures as “unheard of” for public transport.
Hitachi Rail has delivered 20 unmanned trains for the line in Hawaii’s capital and is now responsible for their maintenance, which will continue until 2028, with an option to extend to 2033.
Hitachi Rail trains began running in Honolulu in the summer of 2023. Each four-car train can carry 800 passengers and has a maximum operating speed of 105 km/h. The launch of the line has been delayed several times, partly because of faulty welding in the extruded aluminium beams of the car bodies. The defects were later rectified.
