Italy: The revelation came from Gianluigi Aponte, founder and owner of one of the world’s largest container operators, during a meeting with officials in Genoa.
He said that MSC had agreed to buy a marine diesel engine manufacturing site from Finland’s Wärtsilä for the symbolic sum of €1. In return, the company had promised to employ all 300 workers from the site, which was due to close soon, and to create additional jobs in the long term.
MSC provides container railway transportation in Europe through its subsidiaries Medway and Medlog. In 2023, the company acquired a controlling stake in the private high-speed rail operator NTV-Italo in Italy and formed a JV with the state-owned operator FS to develop freight transport from seaports. A year before, Medway explored the possibility of setting up a car-building facility in Portugal.
