Japan: The seven-car trainset started operation on the 403 km line connecting Tokyo and the city of Shinjō in the northern part of Honshu island. It was first unveiled last February.

By 2026, the Japanese manufacturers are to supply JR East with a total of 15 such trains, which are to replace the E3 fleet, produced in 1995–2009. The new train boasts an increase in its maximum speed: from 275 km/h to 300 km/h. However, it will be used mainly on lines with much lower speeds.

The vehicle has 355 seats (329 second-class and 26 first-class ones). The traction system allows the EMU to operate on 20 kV and 25 kV AC lines. All cars are fitted with active suspension for more comfortable travel.
