Russia: The TMH plant in Novocherkassk obtained TR EAEU 001/2011 certification to produce the locomotive. The approval for mass production was secured for five years up to 2029.
The four-axle EMKA2 is developed on the same platform as the TEM23 diesel locomotive. Its prototype was unveiled at PRO//Motion.Expo last summer. The hybrid electric locomotive is powered by catenary and Li-Ion batteries, ensuring eco-friendly operation.
TMH notes that it is the first such shunting locomotive, produced by the modern Russian rail industry, which ROLLINGSTOCK has included in its top 10 events and trends in the Russian market in 2023. The locomotive will begin commercial operation in 2024, and its serial production is planned for the next year.
EMKA2 is to replace shunting diesel locomotives at passenger train stations and large depots. Previously, it was announced that 131 such locomotives would be delivered to Russian Railways within six years of the first EMKA2 being accepted.
