In May 2022, a consortium of Siemens Mobility and local companies Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction was awarded a contract to build Egypt’s first high-speed railway lines. The project involves the construction of 2,000 km of rail tracks and the provision of a fleet of 41 Velaro high-speed trains, eight car each, 94 four-car Desiro high-capacity regional train sets, and 41 Vectron electric freight locomotives. In the previous year, the German manufacturer, which has a project share of €8,1 bln, delivered the first Desiro to Egypt.
