Austria: With the first trains, the national operator connected Hamburg with Vienna and Innsbruck.
By the end of 2025, the manufacturer, Siemens Mobility, will deliver a total of new-generation 231 Viaggio coaches to form 33 NightJet trains. Over the next eight years, these trains will be deployed on routes in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. The train has already been approved for operation in the first four countries.

The seven-car train can carry up to 254 passengers at a maximum speed of 230 km/h. Technical features include free WiFi, a new passenger information system, charging ports, and compartment control displays. For security, NightJet offers an NFC card access system and video surveillance.

Each train offers a range of comfort options. Two coaches are seated, two are sleeper coaches with two-person compartments and en-suite shower and toilet, and the remaining coaches have four-person compartments and fully functional individual sleeping spaces Mini Cabins. For wheelchair users with an accompanying person, NightJet offers a barrier-free couchette compartment.
