Italy: It cost €1.8 mln for Lombardy’s regional passenger operators Trenord and FNM to refurbish a four-car train, increasing its service life to ten years.

Both the train’s exterior and interior were updated: renewed seats, counting 460 units, new bicycle stands and passenger information and video surveillance systems, and a modified livery. The train was also fitted with four independent traction chains and additional traction converters in case the chains fail.

The TAF EMUs were produced in 1996–2002 by a consortium of AnsaldoBreda (acquired by Hitachi Rail in 2015), ABB and Firema. The trains can reach 140 km/h and can run in multiple up to two. Trenord and FNM’s project, worth more than €60 mln, involves the overhaul of 34 such trains by 2025.
