China: At its Zhuzhou facility, the manufacturer presented the XNY locomotive ordered by Lianyang Iron & Steel. The 1.5 MW vehicle is equipped with a LiFePO4 battery and can haul trainsets weighing up to 1,200 t over up to 128 km.
It takes just three seconds for the fast-charging system specially designed for the locomotive to charge 1 kW. The XNY also has sensors to monitor components and a remote-control system.
According to CRRC, the new vehicle is 12% more efficient than a diesel locomotive, and its life-cycle maintenance costs are 20% lower.
CRRC began production of battery-powered shunting locomotives in 2020, and just two years later, delivered the most powerful such locomotive to date to the local Vale. The vehicle has a battery capacity of 1 MWh and a tractive effort of 520 kN.
