One of the main trends in railway transport in recent years is replacing diesel engines with alternative ones. As all major manufacturers are responsive to market demands, they develop rolling stock on alternative traction.
US: According to Progress Rail, Wabtec is abusing its market position for mainline locomotives, locomotive control systems, and services.
US: Major American manufacturers are working on several series of locomotives which are expected to reduce significantly emissions compared to conventional diesel traction.
Brazil: The first battery-powered CRRC locomotive was delivered to the Vale mining company. At the same time, the Brazilian customer is already operating a similar EMD Joule vehicle, produced Progress Rail.
Russia: The offer price turned out to be 40 mln RUR ($0,52 mln USD) higher than the maximum set by the operator and so the application of Progress Rail was not allowed for evaluation, and the tender was declared invalid.
Australia: In early 2022, Wabtec and Progress Rail (part of Caterpillar) announced orders for battery-powered locomotives from several Australian mining companies.
