Portugal: The French manufacturer and the local civil works company DST are implementing the project to support a large contract for the delivery of new trains to the national operator CP.
The new facility of over 20,000 m2 will be integrated with the existing car repair depot in Matosinhos, located in the Porto Metropolitan Area. Scheduled for launch in 2028, the plant is going to create 300 direct jobs and over 1,000 indirect jobs. Alstom states that the localisation of part of the production will facilitate logistics and reduce the delivery times.
A total of 81 EMUs are expected to be assembled in Portugal, while the contract provides for the supply of 153 units. The deal worth €1 bln includes 98 commuter and 55 regional Adessia Steam trains. Each three-car EMU will be able to accommodate up to 450 passengers.

Alstom has a wide network of production facilities worldwide. Outside France, the company produces multiple units at such European sites as Barcelona’s Santa Perpètua de Mogoda in Spain, Savigliano in Italy, Katowice and Wroclaw in Poland. Meanwhile, Alstom has difficulties in safeguarding the operation of its oldest facilities in the UK and Germany, where the company even had to sell the Görlitz plant. Apart from its European sites, Alstom produces trains in the USA’s Hornell and Plattsburgh, Australia’s Ballarat and Bellevue, and India’s Savli.
