Japan: On July 2, the private passenger operator put the first five-car Series 6050 train in operation on the 1,067 mm Ōimachi commuter line, 12.4 km long.
The remaining 17 EMUs are expected to enter service by 2027. The fleet will replace the Series 9000 and 9020 trains, produced by Tokyu Car (present J-TREC) between 1986 and 1993. According to Tokyu, the new trains are going to be around 40% less energy-consuming, while the noise level will be reduced by 10%. In particular, such efficiency is attributed to the use of Mitsubishi Electric’s traction converters equipped with SiC semiconductors.
The Series 6050 EMUs with stainless bodies can run up to 120 km/h and accommodate 751 passengers, including 240 seated. The interiors also feature dedicated spaces for wheelchair users. The traction is provided by two powered cars fitted with eight motors, which produce a total power output of 1,680 kW.
