Russia: The new rolling stock was shown on 12 August to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and acting governor of the Tver region Vitaly Korolev at the TMH plant in Tver. By the end of the month, after assembly of the entire train is complete, it is to be sent for certification tests.

The EMU is designed for interregional routes on the Central Transport Hub (TsTU), a joint programme run by the Russian government, the Moscow government and Russian Railways through to 2035, delivered under the national project “Infrastructure for Life”.

Against the previous Ivolga 4.0 (EGE2Tv), seating in the new eleven-car train has grown from 646 to 747. The layout has been reworked for longer journeys: doors now sit at the ends of the cars, there’s more room for hand luggage, and new storage areas and racks handle larger items.

The intermediate cars house utility rooms fitted with a coffee machine, a fridge and a food-warming unit. Six sanitary modules run through the train, and the end cars carry toilet facilities adapted for passengers with reduced mobility. The new train wears a light-blue livery.

Door openings stay at 1,400 mm and inter-car gangways at 1,000 mm, unchanged from earlier generations. Design speed is 160 km/h, with acceleration of 1 m/s². TMH says 97% of the train’s components are made in Russia.

Alexander Loshmanov, TMH’s deputy CEO for passenger transport development, said the project came together in record time — roughly six months from the initial brief to the finished train. The first units go to the customer before the year is out, with 17 EMUs of this modification due under the contract.

Sobyanin said Moscow plans to order 100 new trains for the TsTU by 2030: 45 Ivolga 5.0 units for the Kaluga, Nizhny Novgorod and Kursk (Tula) directions, and a further 55 for the Yaroslavl direction. Next in line is the Paveletsky direction, with the programme through 2035 covering roughly 43 more trains.

The Central Exurban Passenger Company said last autumn that the first phase of TsTU development would cover suburban service upgrades from Moscow to the Kaluga, Tula, Vladimir and Ivanovo regions. In line with that, a sizeable follow-on order for 47 Ivolga EMUs with two- and three-door intermediate-car layouts was placed at the end of 2025, with a further two trains ordered at the end of March 2026.
