Denmark: National rail operator DSB has selected a consortium formed by Siemens and Stadler to supply 226 electric trains featuring GoA4, the highest level of automation possible.

The total value of the future contract, including 30 years of maintenance, amounts to DKK 23 bln (€3 bln). The tender also includes options for an additional 100 trains and an extension of the maintenance period to 44 years.

The tendering process began in May 2023, with Alstom of France and CAF of Spain also shortlisted. The order covers four-car low-floor EMUs capable of operating at a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Each 56 m-long train will provide 156 seats, 16 bicycle spaces, and designated areas for passengers with reduced mobility.

The first driverless trains are expected to enter service on the section between Copenhagen and Hellerup in 2032. Fully automated operation on the entire 170 km Copenhagen S-tog suburban network is planned by 2040. It is reported that this will reduce headways in the city centre to as little as 90 seconds during peak hours.

Installation of the CBTC radio-based train control system across the whole S-tog network was completed in September 2022, one of the key prerequisites for driverless operation. The system was supplied by Siemens Mobility.
