Germany: The train has been equipped with automation systems, sensors and cameras at the manufacturer’s test and validation centre in Wegberg-Wildenrath. Trials under real operating conditions are expected to begin shortly.
The upgrade forms part of the large-scale AutomatedTrain project, launched in 2023 by national operator Deutsche Bahn. The project aims to achieve full automation of train preparation and shunting between sidings and passenger platforms without driver involvement. The target is the highest grade of automation, GoA4.
Driverless operation is enabled through the integration of the ETCS train control system with ATO and onboard obstacle detection equipment. A Bombardier Transportation BR 430 EMU is also participating in the trials. The project results are expected to be presented at InnoTrans 2026.
