Germany: Siemens Mobility has presented the first two-car battery-electric Mireo Smart EMU, the “economy” version of the Mireo platform, at the Wegberg-Wildenrath test and validation centre. These trains are expected to enter service on the Remscheid–Düsseldorf line in summer 2026.

The manufacturer claims that the Mireo Smart Plus B has a battery range of 120 km and a maximum speed of 140 km/h. The train provides 122 seats, including eight in first class. It is equipped with silicon carbide (SiC) traction converters.

Under a contract signed at the end of 2024, operator RFG has leased three of these trains for five and a half years from the leasing company Smart Train Lease, which is part of Siemens Mobility.

The battery version of the basic verion of the Mireo entered service in Germany last year. In contrast, the Mireo Smart is designed as a standardised product, offering a lower price point and reduced maintenance costs.
