Germany: Following the tender announced back in early 2023, the Westfalen-Lippe transport authority NWL has signed a contract with the German manufacturer for the delivery of 61 battery-electric trains. The value and the train models are not disclosed.
According to the required technical specifications, the BEMUs must have a maximum speed of 160 km/h and are expected to start operation from December 2029.
The rolling stock will be procured on lease, but without the participation of Smart Train Lease, Siemens Mobility’s leasing subsidiary. It is the UK’s Rock Rail which is going to become a lessor in the deal.
Siemens Mobility has two battery-electric models in its portfolio, the Mireo Plus B (pictured) and the Mireo Smart Plus B. The first Mireo Plus B trains were launched in Germany in 2024, while the Mireo Smart Plus B is expected to be commissioned in summer 2026. Both models feature a battery range of 120 km.
