Romania: The three-car 655-5 Series Regio160 train was unveiled to the public at a conference in Oradea. It will soon undergo testing on a test track in the town of Făurei.
The train will operate at a speed of 160 km/h on 25 kV AC lines. It has a total capacity of 465 passengers, of whom 224 can have seats and 14 can have folding seats. Its IBGT-based inverter motor and optimised weight are said to ensure low energy consumption.
A contract worth €594 mln for these trains was signed with the Romanian railway reform authority ARF at the start of 2024. The contract covers delivery of 62 commuter trains and their 15-year maintenance. A further contract between the same parties provides for the delivery of 29 regional trains from this year.
Before, the Polish manufacturer only supplied trams to the Romanian market, with 37 vehicles handed over between 2012 and 2023.
