Brief overview of key events and news in the rail rolling stock markets.
Uzbekiston temir yollari (UTY) has signed a contract with Hyundai Rotem for six high-speed trains. The seven-car EMUs, each with 389 seats in three classes and a dining car, will be capable of reaching a maximum speed of 250 km/h. The contract, worth KRW 270 bln ($195 mln), includes the provision of maintenance services in cooperation with the national operator Korail.

The Romanian railway reform authority ARF has signed a contract with Pesa for the supply of 20 three-car trains, after the Polish company won the tender last autumn and French Alstom tried to challenge it. The contract includes the supply of rolling stock for RON 840.4 mln (€166.8 mln) and the provision of 15-year maintenance for RON 276 mln (€55.4 mln), including an option for nine trains. Pesa has also won another tender for the supply of 62 EMUs to Romania.
The national Swiss operator SBB has announced a tender for up to 200 double-deck EMUs. Under the firm part, the customer expects to receive 116 trains with a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Deliveries are scheduled for after 2030, with the winning bidder to be selected by the end of next year.
The Austrian operator OBB has cancelled the tender for the delivery of up to 70 double-deck passenger coaches worth €249.5 mln. The official reason given was a change in business interests, but no further details have been announced.
The infrastructure company Spitzke has placed an order with Vossloh Rolling Stock, part of CRRC, for ten DE 18 shunting locomotives. The locomotives, which are expected to be delivered in summer 2025, feature the capability of operating on diesel or hydrotreated vegetable oil.
Ukrainian Railways has been granted approval for a loan to the value of 80 dual-system electric locomotives. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will provide €300 mln, while the World Bank will allocate $190 mln. The tender was announced in May.

Russian Railways (RZD) has ordered eight more ES104 Finist EMUs under a new supplementary agreement to the contract with Sinara – Transport Machines (STM) signed last year. The five-car trains totalling 40 cars are scheduled for delivery by the end of September, with two vehicles currently undergoing preparation for operation. In accordance with the initial contract, Ural Locomotives, STM’s subsidiary, has built 22 trains. RZD has announced its expectation of receiving 17 Finist trains, comprising 88 cars, within the current year.
