Germany: DB Regio, a subsidiary of the national operator Deutsche Bahn, has announced the tender. ROLLINGSTOCK estimates that the cost of rolling stock alone, without additional services, could reach €4–5 bln.
The technical specifications call for a length of 68.3 m, a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and a capacity of around 600 passengers. The trains are expected to be based on the four-car class 423 (pictured) and 430, which are currently in service in several German regions.
DB Regio plans to ink up to three framework agreements for the period from April 2026 to March 2034. The contracts will include maintenance and the supply of spare parts. The new fleet will initially be delivered to S-Bahns in the Rhein-Main region, Stuttgart, and Munich.
