Italy: On 2 September, the first eight-car trainset had its inaugural run on the Rome–Naples line. The vehicle is certified for operation at 360 km/h, although it will reach a maximum speed of 300 km/h in regular service.
The upgraded ETR 1000 (Frecciarossa 1000) was first unveiled at InnoTrans 2024. Hitachi Rail fitted the train with new bogies, traction motors and other power equipment, as well as a predictive diagnostics system to control the condition of the components. The interior was also renewed.
In 2023, the local operator Trenitalia and the manufacturer signed a framework contract worth €1.3 bln for the delivery of 36 ETR 1000 trainsets with an option for an additional 10 units. The rolling stock is produced at Hitachi Rail’s sites in Naples and Pistoia.

For the first time, the ETR 1000 train was introduced by a consortium of Bombardier Transportation and AnsaldoBreda in 2013. As long as the two companies had been taken over, the intellectual property rights were completely acquired by Hitachi Rail in 2022.
