Italy: The stationary TrainScanner system is now operational across three depots of passenger operator Trenord.
TrainScanner is an inspection station with multiple cameras, which collects data and analyses it using artificial intelligence and computer vision to conduct a comprehensive assessment of wheels, bogies, brakes and pantographs.
Previously, a visual inspection required up to 16 hours to complete. The new system performs the procedure in seconds each time a train enters the depot. At the Novate Milanese facility, the system now monitors up to 1,600 wheels and brake systems daily, along with 100 pantographs, automatically generating notifications when irregularities are detected.
It is reported that TrainScanner enhances fleet availability through regular diagnostic data collection. In the near future, the system will be installed in two additional Trenord depots. The Italian manufacturer first presented the solution in October at Milan’s Expo Ferroviaria.
