India: The national operator’s plans have been unveiled by the Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, following the publication of the country’s Budget 2025.

According to the Minister, during the next two to three years, Indian Railways will receive 200 Vande Bharat EMUs with sleeper and seating cars, 100 push-pull Amrit Bharat trains, and 50 Namo Bharat EMUs for regional transit services.

Besides, a total of 2,000 passenger coaches are expected to be produced in 2025 and 2026. An additional 17,500 general non-air-conditioned passenger coaches will be also purchased in the years to come. By late March, a batch of 1,400 coaches is due to be fully delivered to the national operator.

Indian Railways’ overall budget for the upcoming financial year accounts for INR 2.52 tn ($29 bln). The operator plans to invest not only into purchase of rolling stock and construction of infrastructure, but also into full electrification of the country’s railway network.
