India: National operator Indian Railways has announced this target, expanding on earlier plans to introduce 200 Vande Bharat seated and sleeper trains in 2025–2026.

Developed under the Make in India programme, the Vande Bharat EMU platform is mass-produced at Indian Railways’ ICF plant in Chennai, with production gradually expanding to other manufacturing units. Between 2019 and October 2025, 76 Vande Bharat Express trains with seats entered service in 8, 16, and 20-car configurations.

The sleeper Vande Bharat is also under development, with ICF and BEML producing a 16-car prototype in 2024. Ten such trains are planned to be manufactured, while Kinet Railway Solutions, a joint venture of Russia’s TMH and local RVNL, will produce 120 additional trains (1,920 cars). A further 53 sleeper Vande Bharat trains are being produced by a JV of Indian Titagarh and BHEL.
