UK: The Class 802/2 hybrid train trials delivered such results on several occasions in battery mode.
Before the trials, which have been conducted since May, one of the three diesel engines was replaced by a battery with the same output of 700 kW. Initially, the train was powered by catenary and diesel engines.
The entire trial period has surpassed Hitachi Rail’s expectations by a third as actual fuel costs savings were between 35% and 50%. It is said that the battery managed to power train to run for up to 70 km and accelerate up to 120 km/h.
The Japanese manufacturer implements this approximately $22 mln project with the operator TransPennine Express and the leasing company Angel Trains. The next step is the production of a battery-electric train with a range of between 100 km and 150 km. The introduction of such trains is to allow abandoning diesel traction on some routes and saving on electrification projects.
