Italy: Trenitalia has released a video showcasing Hitachi Rail’s forthcoming battery-hybrid train, similar to the existing tri-mode Blues but without a diesel engine. The first four-car units are scheduled to enter service in summer 2026.
The train will draw power from the overhead catenary and onboard batteries with a capacity exceeding 600 kWh, providing an autonomous range of 100 km. Battery recharging will take place via two pantographs in around 30 minutes, with regenerative braking returning energy to the batteries.

The interior will offer 192 seats, including 30 premium seats, plus space for eight bicycles. The trainset will incorporate 93% recyclable materials.
Trenitalia placed the order in mid-2025 under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The contract covers 19 hybrid trains: 13 Blues units and 6 of the new battery-electric model.
