Croatia: The three-car train connects Zagreb and Bjelovar. The first section of 44 km is a 25 kV AC line, which allows for operation at 160 km/h, while the remaining 30 km can be operated in battery mode at 120 km/h.
A 157-seat train can carry 315 passengers. Its 12 Leclanche Li-ion batteries with a total capacity of 631 kW⋅h are said to provide a range of 480 km per day.
The train is supplied under a contract, worth €17 mln without VAT, signed with the national operator HŽPP for a BEMU, a BMU and six charging stations. The BMU was on display at this year’s Innotrans and is not yet in service.
This is Končar’s first attempt to produce battery-powered trains. Since 2011, the company has supplied more than 60 diesel- and catenary-powered trains for HŽPP.
