Sweden: Since early February, the three-car double-deck Coradia Duplex X40 train has been operating between Västerås and Stockholm.
Designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h, the trains were delivered by Alstom from 2004 to 2008. The refurbishment allows for extending the vehicles’ service life for 15 years.
The overhaul activities have included a complete renewal of the interior and exterior as well as renovation of the toilets. Now the interior features a new lighting system, bicycle storage spaces and radio-transparent windows for better mobile connectivity.

A €35 mln contract for the refurbishment of 27 such vehicles (about €1.3 mln per one trainset) was awarded to VR FleetCare (part of Finland’s operator VR Group) in April 2023. The works are undertaken at the company’s facilities in Oulo and Pieksämäki. SJ, Sweden’s national operator, expects to receive the upgraded fleet by January 2028.
