Chile: The corresponding agreement was signed late in October between the national operator EFE, the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, the National Hydrogen Institute INH2, and Hydrox, a green energy consultancy.
It is the three-car UT-440 train, produced by CAF in the 1970-s and operated on the Biotren suburban line up to 2021, that will be converted. The overhaul will take place at EFE’s depot in Santiago. A hydrogen traction system is planned to be developed specifically for the project in order to fit the EMU. The trainset will later undergo testing on the routes, defined by EFE, to assess its operational viability for a possible expansion of the project.
This summer, the country received the first hydrogen locomotive supplied by CRRC. This shunting vehicle will be in service on the narrow-gauge FCAB railway. The order was received in November 2022.
