USA: Alstom is set to receive a major order to supply up to 558 electric multiple unit (EMU) cars for the New York metropolitan area, following approval of a $2.3 bln framework contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The procurement is part of MTA’s 2025–2029 capital investment plan.
The firm portion of the contract covers the delivery of 316 M-9A series EMU cars for use by Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad. The first cars are scheduled to be delivered in 2029, with entry into service expected in 2030. Final deliveries are slated for completion by 2032. Assembly will take place at Alstom’s facilities in Hornell and Plattsburgh, New York.
The new M-9A trains will feature automatic doors and onboard restrooms, and are intended to replace the aging M3 fleet manufactured by U.S.-based Budd Company in the 1980s.
The contract was initially awarded in 2020 to China’s CRRC. However, the company was later disqualified from the tender process following the introduction of a federal funding ban on the procurement of rolling stock from Chinese manufacturers.
