Portugal: French manufacturer has finalised a contract with state operator Comboios de Portugal. The deal, worth more than €1 bln, includes the supply of 153 three-car Adessia Stream trainsets.
This agreement represents Portugal’s largest-ever train procurement. It follows a tender whose results were announced in November 2023. Contract signing was repeatedly delayed due to appeals from other bidders, CAF and Stadler. The firm portion for 117 trains was formalised last October. Originally, the first trains were scheduled for service entry this year. However, due to delays in finalising the tender outcome, the launch has been postponed to 2029.

A fleet of 98 trainsets, comprising more than 95% recyclable components, will serve suburban passenger routes, with the remaining 55 units operating on regional lines. Each train will accommodate up to 450 passengers and include spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles.
As part of the contract implementation, Alstom must build a factory and depot in the country. The company has confirmed its previously announced plans to establish a production site in Matosinhos in partnership with local construction firm DST. The facility, spanning more than 20,000 m², will create around 300 jobs across engineering, technical, and operational roles.
