Ireland: Irish Rail CEO Mary Considine confirmed that the Li-Ion traction batteries used in Dublin’s X’trapolis trains are identical – apart from capacity – to those installed on Melbourne’s Flexity 2 trams.
However, the latter ones showed reliability issues during tests, according to Ms. Considine.
As a result, Alstom and French battery manufacturer OP Mobility have decided to redesign the batteries, which will now require recertification. This has pushed the train launch schedule from late 2025 to the Q1 2027. Ms. Considine emphasised that no battery issues were observed during the year-long testing of the X’trapolis trains themselves.
Under the firm part of a 2021 contract, Alstom is to supply 37 five-car trains to Irish Rail, including 19 units, powered by catenary and batteries with an operational range of over 80 km.
