China: The Hydrogen Spring is operating on a 300 m track in Changchun. The local CRRC facility overhauled and converted a 200 series tram, built by Nippon Sharyo in 1941, to produce this advanced vehicle.
Almost every component of the old tram has been renewed, including the bodywork, gear and interior. The refurbished vehicle now houses a café, complete with chairs, tables and sofas.
The tram consumes 1.5 kW·h per 1 km, has a range of over 320 km, and has a hydrogen charge of 42.7 kg. The fuel cells are provided by Guohong Hydrogen Energy. According to CRRC, the hydrogen storage has a high impact resistance.
The route is set to be lengthened to 778 m by September. In addition, there are plans to boost tourist traffic with vehicles of up to six cars.
