UAE: The project is being developed by the US start-up RAILBUS and Dubai’s transport operator RTA under the 2024 MoU. Construction and operation of the new system is expected to cost 20 to 30% less than similar vehicles.
The mock-up of a rail bus is currently exhibited at the World Government Summit. The prototype, which will be able to accommodate 40 people, is to be 3D printed from recyclable materials. The vehicle will be powered by solar batteries, located between rails. Its maximum speed will reach 100 km/h. The RAILBUS, named after its developer, will move autonomously, with the remaining driver’s cab, and be compatible with standard rail tracks.
The RAILBUS is seen as a vehicle to transport passengers to metro and tram stations. The RTA intends to prepare a feasibility study within two or three years and proceed with a pilot project.
