USA: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New-York has included this purchase and fleet maintenance for $7.6 bln in its 2025-2029 capital programme.
355 cars are expected to replace the R68 and R68A series built by Westinghouse of the USA and Kawasaki of Japan in 1986–1989, which have not yet been replaced. The remainder will replace the R62 and R62A series trains supplied by Kawasaki and Bombardier in 1983–1987. All new trains will be fitted with CBTC systems.
The New York City metro fleet renewal activities comprise the Kawasaki R211As, R211Ss and R211Ts, phased into service starting from 2023. The trains are produced at two Kawasaki Rail plants in Lincoln and Yonkers, USA. Of the 1,612 cars covered by the framework contract, 1,175 have been ordered to date, with deliveries delayed by two years.
