India: The eight-car Metropolis trains started operation on the first 12.4 km stretch of Line 3.
Like the city’s two other lines, Line 2 and 7, the Aqua Line has platform screen doors. There is a driver cab in the train, but it is possible to make the vehicles fully unmanned, meeting the GoA4 level. Each metro train is reported to accommodate 3,000 passengers. Alstom says it has powered 75% of axles for the first time in India’s metro to provide rapid acceleration and deceleration.
Currently, Mumbai’s metro operator, MMRCL, has received 24 out of 31 ordered trains. The deliveries are to be completed together with the line’s launch in 2025. The €315 mln rolling stock was ordered in 2018. Under the Make in India programme, it is produced at the plant in SriCity, which also manufactures metro trains for Pune, Delhi and Chennai.
