Malaysia: On 28 June, the 37.8 km LRT3 line with 20 stations was opened in Shah Alam by the country’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during an official launch ceremony. The passenger services started the next day, with the trains operating at eight-minute headways during rush hours and at 10–15 minutes off-peak.
CRRC has delivered 22 three-car trainsets to serve the line, while an additional seven units are planned to be added to the fleet in the future. The rolling stock is reported to run at a speed of 80 km/h and accommodate up to 624 passengers. Fully automated at GoA4, the trains are equipped with a regenerative braking system and air-conditioning with a smart control system that adjusts according to the number of passengers on board and interior temperature.
It is worth noting that this order is CRRC’s sixth contract in Malaysia as well as the first foreign LRV project with fully unattended services, implemented under the supervision of Chinese companies.
Initially, the route was scheduled to open in 2020 but faced numerous delays due to the change of government and shortage of funding, among the main reasons. The total cost of the project is valued at $4 bln.
