Recent announcements and deals in the LRV market.
USA — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York (MTA) has ordered 378 metro cars from Kawasaki. The new rolling stock of the R268 model is expected to be delivered in 2028–2030, replacing the R68 and R68A trains, produced by Westinghouse in cooperation with Alstom and Kawasaki in the 1980s. The procurement worth $1.5 bln is part of MTA’s Capital Plan for 2025–2030. Under the 2018 contract and two options, the Japanese manufacturer is currently delivering 1,610 cars of the R211 series for New York’s metro.

Russia — This year Moscow Metro will purchase five trainsets (40 cars in total) of the new model Moskva 2026, as reported by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The fleet is designated for the Green Line. Based on the previous model, Moskva 2024, the new metro cars will not have serious changes in appearance. Previously, it was announced that 704 Moskva 2026 cars would be ordered from the TMH plant in Mytishchi in 2026–2027.
India — Titagarh will deliver 22 six-car unmanned trains for the future Line 5 of Mumbai Metro. The contract worth INR 25 bln ($280 mln) also includes the installation of signalling systems, platform doors, depot equipment and five years of maintenance service. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has earlier placed an order with the Indian manufacturer for 18 metro trains for Line 6. Alstom and BEML are also supplying rolling stock for Mumbai Metro.

Uzbekistan — Tashkent Metro plans to purchase 14 four-car trainsets in 2026. The order without the name of the producer has been announced by the press service of the Uzbek capital’s metro. In recent years, the city has been receiving mainly the 81-765.5/766.5/767.5 metro trains (based on the Moskva platform) from the TMH plant in Mytishchi. The Russian manufacturer delivered 41 such trainsets to Tashkent from 2019 to 2025.
Germany — The urban transport operators of Görlitz (GVB) and Zwickau (SVZ) have announced a joint tender for the supply of up to 32 trams. The firm part includes six LRVs for Zwickau and eight for Görlitz to be delivered by late 2028. The tender calls for narrow-gauge (1,000 mm) and at least 60% low-floor trams with a capacity of a minimum of 140 passengers. Previously, the cities of Görlitz, Zwickau and Leipzig placed an order for the same rolling stock with German HeiterBlick, which initiated the bankruptcy proceedings this year. However, Leipzig does not participate in the new tender, as the city hopes to receive the fleet under the contract with HeiterBlick.

Germany — Siemens Mobility has delivered the last of 84 low-floor GT8N-2 trams for Bremen. Back in 2020, the city’s operator BSAG received the first four-section LRV based on the Avenio platform. The new rolling stock has allowed for enlarging the fleet and decommissioning the ageing GT8N trams, produced by local AEG and Adtranz between 1993 and 1996.
