Iran: In September, MAPNA Group was ordered to supply 60 three-section trams for Mashhad. The agreement followed a tender announced in 2022.
In an exclusive comment to ROLLINGSTOCK, the company confirmed that this order marks the first domestic production of trams in Iran. The main assembly will take place at the group’s Wagon Pars plant in Arak, while the bogies will be supplied by another subsidiary, MLC, based in Karaj. The overall local content is expected to reach at least 50%.

Each tram will measure 29.7 m in length and feature three bogies with an axle load of 11.5 tonnes. Two bogies will each be fitted with 130 kW traction motors. The vehicles will be equipped with electrodynamic and electrohydraulic brakes and electromagnetic track brakes, and powered via a 750 V DC overhead line.

The trams will have a maximum speed of 80 km/h, with an average operating speed of 34 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 35 km/h will be 1.14 m/s², while the minimum curve radius and maximum gradient will be 30 m and 40‰, respectively.
Mashhad’s urban rail system—which includes light rail and metro—has been in operation since 2011. The city’s first fleet of 60 three-section low-floor trams was supplied by China’s CNR, which became part of CRRC in 2015.
