USA: The new 28,500 m2 facility in Hagerstown will be able to produce up to 20 cars per month.
A total of $100 mln has been invested into the project, which would employ 460 workers on site and support around 1,300 jobs in total, including those engaged in the supply chains.
The plant is set to fulfil three active orders: for 256 metro cars (with an option for an additional 800) for Washington, 200 metro cars for Philadelphia, and 78 metro cars for Baltimore. It should be noted that the trains under the latter contract were initially assembled at Hitachi Rail’s plant in Florida. The manufacturer’s first US site was opened in 2016 to implement a base contract for 136 metro cars for Miami’s metro network.
The construction of the Hagerstown facility was announced in 2022. At that time, the company claimed that the plant could refocus on producing other types of rolling stock, in particular trams and HSR trains.
