Italy: The three-car bi-directional tram has been running on two routes in the Italian city since last week. All 74 vehicles, ordered by Milan’s operator ATM, are expected to be put into public service within two coming years.
The 25.4 m long low-floor trams have three doors on each side and are fitted with three steering bogies under all cars. The interior has 66 vandalism-proof seats and areas for wheelchairs. With 440 kW motors, the trams can reach 60 km/h. The new trams are to replace high-floor articulated Class 4600 and 4700 vehicles, produced by local Stanga and Breda in the 1955–1960s.
Stadler supplies trams to Milan under 2020 and 2023 contracts. Currently, 60 three-car and 14 five-car LRVs have been ordered, with a total value of €190 mln. The trams are being manufactured at the plant in Valencia, Spain.
