Greece: A fleet of 18 four-car Hitachi Rail trains has started commercial service on a 9.6 km line in Thessaloniki.

The line features 13 stations equipped with platform doors and Hitachi Rail’s CBTC digital signalling technology, ensuring GoA4 operation, but with a driver always in a head car.

Each train holds up to 450 passengers with 96 of them seated. The trains were manufactured in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Hitachi Rail has supplied similar trains and automation equipment to Copenhagen, Milan, Taipei, and Lima.

After the first Greek metro in Athens, the second metro network was expected to be built between 2006 and 2012, but archaeological findings and debt problems delayed its start. The second line in Thessaloniki is to enter service in the end of 2025 with 14 trains of the same model.
