Austria: The five-section tram began carrying passengers in the city on 27 May. Eight of the vehicles have now been delivered to Graz, having already clocked up around 1,800 km across the Vienna and Graz networks. The new fleet is expected to enter service in stages over the course of the year.
Each 33.8 m Flexity seats 60 and holds 200 passengers in total, with a top speed of 70 km/h. It has six double doors on one side, two wheelchair spaces, and multi-purpose areas for prams and bicycles. The trams are built at Alstom’s plant in Vienna.
The contract for 15 trams was signed with Graz public transport operator Holding Graz in February 2024. A follow-on order for a further 16 vehicles was placed in March last year. Each new tram costs roughly €3.5 mln, and the full contracted fleet is due to be in service by mid-2028. Graz city council is expected to decide this month on the purchase of another 24 trams, with funding to be supported in part by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
