India: Rolling stock manufacturer BEML has unveiled the first six-car 5RS-DM series trainset at its Bengaluru facility.
Five of these driverless trains are scheduled to enter service in May 2026, when the initial section of the Pink Line metro is inaugurated. By December, once the second section opens, 23 trainsets are expected to be in operation, providing peak headways of 4.5 minutes.
Each train with inter-car gangways has a capacity of 2,000 passengers and a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The car bodies are made of austenitic stainless steel, and the trains are equipped for driverless operation, GoA4. Traction motors are supplied by Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric.
BEML secured the contract for 53 trainsets in August 2023, beating competitors Alstom, CAF and Titagarh. An additional 13 trains were ordered in March and December 2025. The total contract value is INR 39.9 bln ($439.34 mln), which includes 15 years of maintenance.
BEML has previously delivered more than 2,000 metro cars for networks across India, in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric and South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem.
