USA: The vehicle has been demonstrated by the American manufacturer in the centre of Pittsburgh. Since last year, Wabtec has been testing the prototype at its own facilities, located in the city.
This version is named Maverick, and this is a newly-built locomotive equipped with a three-axle bogie from an older locomotive. Wabtec also suggests the Pathfinder version which would use existing locomotives but fit them with cameras, sensors, and other digital equipment to ensure driverless operation.

The Maverick runs on batteries, though their power and traction force have not yet been disclosed. Meanwhile, diesel and hydrogen models are also envisaged, as Wabtec points out.
The Maverick autonomous locomotive is reportedly intended to haul freight cars for distances from 1,130 to 1,600 km. Introduction of the vehicle would improve railways’ competitiveness over road transportation.
