Uzbekistan: The Presidential Administration has announced a new agreement with Chinese partners to supply 38 locomotives and modernise 12 electric locomotives for $181 mln.

A respective decision has been made following the meeting with the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and is to be implemented as part of the development of Uzbekiston Temir Yollari, the national operator.

Updated on 16/08/2024: CRRC has signed a contract with Uzbekiston Temir Yollari for the renewal of the locomotive fleet, according to the national operator. The Chinese manufacturer will supply 38 passenger and freight electric and diesel locomotives and shunting locomotives on an instalment basis until 2034. CRRC will also refurbish all 12 O’zbekiston electric locomotives developed by Siemens Mobility and built in China in 2003–2004.

CRRC has been supplying its locomotives to Uzbekistan for over twenty years. In 2020, the national operator took delivery of two-section electric freight locomotives with a capacity of 14,400 kW in continuous mode. Other suppliers include Russian TMH, which delivered locomotives for Uzbekiston Temir Yollari, and Sinara–Transport Machines, which supplied vehicles to industrial locomotives. According to the Organisation for Cooperation of Railways, the average daily operation of diesel and electric locomotives in Uzbekistan in 2022 was 182 and 103, respectively.

At the meeting with Mirziyoyev, it was also noted that Uzbekiston Temir Yollari has replenished its fleet with 1,040 freight and 45 passenger cars. The announced plans for the purchase of passenger rolling stock provide for six high-speed trains from Hyundai Rotem. However, the official report on the meeting did not include any information about the project to develop its own EMU production, which was announced this March.
